Lauren Spiker founded a Rochester-based nonprofit in 2001 to help teens and young adults cope with cancer. It was a way to honor her own daughter, Melissa Marie Sengbusch, who in 2000 at the age of 19 died of cancer. The nonprofit has worked with more than 200 participants.
