Medical society to host wellness symposium for health professionals, students

The Monroe County Medical Society will host a Wellness Symposium from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., April 10, at the Rochester Academy of Medicine at 1441 East Avenue, Rochester.

The symposium on human-centered wellness, titled “You Can’t Stop the Waves but You Can Learn to Surf,” is desgned for physicians, advanced practice providers, medical residents/students, nursing and all healthcare workers.

“The Monroe County Medical Society is committed to fostering the well-being of our members and the communities we serve. This wellness symposium serves as a vital platform to explore innovative strategies and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing wellness across the Finger Lakes region”, said Monroe County Medical Society CEO Lucía Castillejo.

The focus will be for attendees to learn how clinician and health team wellbeing support all aspects of the Quintuple Aim, which includes better outcomes, advancing health equity, improving patient experience, lowering costs, and helping caregivers to thrive. Presentation topics will include: “A Health System Perspective on Burnout in Academic Health Care,” “Peer Support for Second Victims in the Healthcare Setting,” “AI and Wellness-Centered Leadership” and more.

“When we prioritize clinician wellbeing, we strengthen every pillar of the Quintuple Aim, leading to better care for both healthcare workers and patients. This symposium is a vital step toward a healthier, more sustainable future for our medical community,” explains MCMS President Janine Fogarty, M.D.

Embrace Your Sisters (EYS) holds fashion show fundraiser

Save-the-date for the 18th Annual Embrace Your Sisters (EYS) Fashion Show Fundraiser, which will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Casa Larga Vineyards & Winery in Fairport. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.

The fashion show is one of two annual events which are coordinated by the volunteer EYS board members to raise money in support of breast cancer patients across Monroe County and the neighboring 12 counties, providing them with short-term emergency funding.

NCADD-RA luncheon to feature Harvard psychobiology

Join DePaul’s National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence – Rochester Area (NCADD-RA) for its annual luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at the DoubleTree by Hilton at 1111 Jefferson Road in Rochester. Keynote speaker Bertha Madras, a professor of psychobiology at Harvard Medical School, will present “Marijuana and Psychedelics: Essential Facts Everyone Should Know.”

Madras’ research has focused on neurobiology, pharmacology, brain imaging, drug discovery for addiction, neuropsychiatric disorders and drug policy. She is author of over 200 scientific manuscripts, articles, book chapters and co-editor of books involving addiction, the effects of drug abuse on the human nervous system and including “The Cell Biology of Addiction, Effects of Drug Abuse on the Human Nervous System, Imaging of the Human Brain in Health and Disease.” Madras is a recipient of 19 U.S. and 27 international issued patents with collaborators.

The NCADD-RA provides research-based and evidence-based substance use disorder and problem gambling prevention services to a diverse population through education, support, resources, advocacy and referral.

NCADD-RA staff provide community education and awareness presentations on a variety of addiction-related topics tailored to requesting school or community groups. NCADD-RA also provides a wide array of training opportunities for professionals in the addictions, education, and health and human services community.
