For most of us, the goal as we age is simple: remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.
Sometimes, though, a little extra support can make life easier, safer and far more enjoyable.
Understanding the different levels of senior care can help families see that these services are not about losing independence. They are about maintaining it.
At St. Ann’s Community at Cherry Ridge, residents have access to a full continuum of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care assisted living, enhanced assisted living and skilled nursing. That means residents can remain part of the same community, surrounded by familiar faces, friendships and routines as their needs change over time.
• Independent Living is ideal for older adults who want a maintenance-free lifestyle while continuing to live fully on their own. Residents enjoy private apartments, social opportunities, transportation, dining, activities and the convenience of community living without the responsibilities of home upkeep.
• Assisted Living is designed for individuals who are mostly independent but may benefit from help with certain daily tasks such as medications, dressing, bathing, meals or housekeeping. One of the most important things families should understand is that residents direct their own care. Assistance is available as much or as little as it is needed.
There is often a misconception that assisted living means giving up freedom or control. In reality, our goal is to support residents in maintaining their independence, routines and lifestyle. No one is rushing residents out of bed in the morning. Each person has an individualized plan of care built around their personal preferences and needs. Support is available when requested, allowing residents to continue enjoying active social lives, meaningful friendships, and the activities they love throughout the day.
• Enhanced Assisted Living provides a higher level of support for individuals who may require more involved assistance while still wanting a residential setting. At Cherry Ridge this can include residents who use oxygen or certain mobility equipment or those who need more hands-on support throughout the day. Care becomes more structured based on individual preferences and medical needs, but the goal remains the same: helping residents feel comfortable, supported, and engaged in daily life.
• Memory Care Assisted Living is designed for individuals experiencing memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia who benefit from a more secure and supportive environment. Residents receive personalized care, structured routines and specialized programming that helps create comfort, familiarity and connection throughout the day.
• Skilled Nursing provides 24-hour medical care and support for individuals with more complex medical conditions or rehabilitation needs following illness, hospitalization or surgery. Skilled nursing includes clinical care, therapy services and ongoing support from licensed healthcare professionals.
The most important thing families should know is that moving into Assisted Living or another level of care does not mean life stops. At Cherry Ridge, residents still make their own choices, maintain friendships, attend activities, and enjoy full social calendars. Their neighbors are still right next door. Their favorite routines continue. The difference is simply that support is available when it is needed.
Sometimes the right support can make independence last even longer.
