• New da Vinci 5 — Strong Memorial Hospital has become one of the first hospitals in Upstate New York to adopt the newest generation of the da Vinci surgical system, the da Vinci 5. The state-of-the-art technology represents a significant advance in robotic-assisted surgery, bringing enhanced precision and control that can improve patient outcomes. “Adopting the da Vinci 5 is more than acquiring new equipment—it’s a strategic investment in patient care and surgical education,” said physician Thomas Osinski, urologic surgeon at UR Medicine and director of the Surgical Research and Genitourinary Engineering (SURGE) Lab. “This next-generation system represents an important step forward in how we deliver care. With enhanced precision, haptic feedback, and advanced imaging, it strengthens our ability to perform complex procedures more safely and effectively. Most importantly, it reflects our ongoing commitment to improving outcomes and quality of life for our patients.”
• Physician Richard Schulick, a seasoned healthcare executive and current director of the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and chair of surgery at the University of Colorado, is expected to join the University of Rochester Medical Center in April as chief clinical officer, a pivotal role designed to strengthen integration and coordination across our patient care enterprise.
• Deirdre Salanger, a health care administrator with deep experience at high-profile urban health systems, joined URMC as chief operating officer of Strong Memorial Hospital in July.
• U.S. News & World Report named Strong Memorial Hospital the region’s top hospital in its 2025–2026 Best Hospitals rankings and has maintained its position as the highest-ranked hospital in Upstate New York, outside of the New York City metro area.
• The hospital will continue construction of the Strong Expansion Project, which by 2028 will nearly quadruple the size of its ED and include space for psychiatric emergency care. The expansion will also add a nine-story pavilion, which will include floors for diagnostic and treatment services, cardiovascular care, and add more than 100 private rooms to our inpatient hospital. We will continue to train and recruit outstanding doctors, nurses, other health professionals, and staff members to meet the growing demand for patient care in our region.
• The National Cancer Institute (NCI) named the University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Institute as the nation’s 73rd designated cancer center. The distinction places the institute in the top 4 percent of all cancer centers in the United States.
