After a tough winter, it’s time to get some fresh air outside
By Shaina Zazzaro
After what seemed to me as the longest winter in the history of Rochester, the sun is starting to shine again! Yes, sunshine feels good, but getting outside also provides important benefits for physical and mental health.
One of the simplest ways to improve your health is by spending time in fresh air and sunlight. After so many months of being indoors, stepping outside can boost your mood, reduce stress and increase your energy levels. You will feel more refreshed and balanced with just a little bit of vitamin D!
Sunlight plays such an important role in our health because it helps the body produce vitamin D. Many people experience lower levels of vitamin D during the winter months due to limited sun exposure, and vitamin D is crucial in supporting bone health, immune function and energy levels. Spending just 10-20 minutes outside in the sunlight can help support your levels!
Walking is one of the easiest and most effective forms of exercise, and spring is the perfect time to start. Find a path near your house, take a ride to a local park — I always love hiking at Mendon Ponds — or find a nice canal to enjoy the water and maybe even feed the ducks.
As little as a 20-30 minute walk each day can improve heart health, support joint mobility, and help maintain a healthy weight. Walking outdoors also provides mental benefits, helping reduce anxiety and improve overall mood.
As always, let’s remember that spring is a great time to focus on healthy habits — incorporate healthy foods into your diet such as fruits, veggies, and healthy proteins to support your overall wellness.
As the weather improves, consider using the season as motivation to move more, enjoy the outdoors and prioritize healthy habits. Sometimes the simplest steps — fresh air, a daily walk, and nourishing foods — can make the biggest difference in how we feel.
So go outside, eat healthy and feel your best!
