Helping couples embrace healthy relationships, intimacy and sexuality
Q: What is the mission of Kavod Psychotherapy?
A: Founded in 1993, Kavod Psychotherapy helps people from all walks of life, religious backgrounds and sexual orientations learn how to bring true intimacy into their lives and form healthy relationships. Couples trust Kavod therapists and counselors to help them deal the betrayal, trauma and fallout created when something or someone comes between them. That includes: poor communication, lack of trust, infidelity, pornography, anonymous hook-ups, emotional distance or detachment, work and money issues, a loveless, sexless relationship.
Our approach to couples work is unique in a few ways:
• We never take sides. By neutralizing any divisiveness upfront, we ensure each partner has a safe and confidential environment in which to pursue therapy.
• We use a team strategy. Kavod pairs each partner with his or her therapist to uncover and address personal issues. Once each person begins to heal, couples can choose to meet with our couples therapist to rebuild trust and open the lines of communication with each other. Lastly, each partner participates in one of our weekly men or women’s groups. Having a supportive community that understands and honors all the couple has done to reclaim their lives and relationship is often the most powerful part of the journey for both people.
• We cultivate trust. Couples tell us our approach doesn’t make them feel teamed up against, which keeps them coming back to Kavod, staying open to each other, and moving forward.
Q: What services do you offer?
A: In addition to an excellent team of therapists and counselors with decades of experience, Kavod Psychotherapy offers an array of therapeutic modalities and programs on site to address the needs of our clients. It includes: individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, trauma therapy, partner therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR trauma treatment, art therapy, movement therapy, yoga classes, guided meditation classes, psycho-educational groups, intensives and workshops and 12-step support.
Also, Kavod offers the latest, most effective outpatient treatment available for sex and relationship addiction and partner trauma in the region. To ensure the integrity of our program, every Kavod therapist is also a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT).
Our founders — Dan Morris and Robert Meadows — were early proponents for the treatment of addictive and compulsive behaviors around sexuality. As LCSWs and Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist-Supervisors (CSAT-S) with more than 70 years of combined experience, Morris and Meadows share their expertise with therapists through New York state seeking CSAT credentials through the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP).
Q: What are your aspirations for the future?
A: An essential next step for Kavod Psychotherapy is community outreach. We want to educate people about the epidemic hiding in plain sight: Internet addiction and the excessive use of pornography. Healthcare providers need to recognize that these and other problematic behaviors destroy relationships, alienate families, and ruin lives more often than we know. Starting the conversation is not easy, but with Kavod as a resource, healthcare providers can encourage people to seek help and begin the healing to rebuild their lives.
If you’d like us to speak to your organization about this epidemic or any of the work we do, please contact Dan Morris at dmorris@kavodrecovery.com.
